Description

The Groot Constantia Pinotage 2023 is a vibrant and approachable expression of South Africa’s signature grape, shaped by the historic estate’s cool-climate vineyards in Constantia. Known for producing Pinotage with freshness and elegance, this wine reflects both heritage and modern winemaking precision.

In the glass, it shows a bright ruby-red hue, opening with generous aromas of ripe strawberries and cherries, layered with subtle hints of dark chocolate and toasted oak. The palate follows through with juicy red fruit, supported by fresh acidity and soft, well-integrated oak, creating a wine that is both lively and balanced. The finish is smooth and elegant, making this Pinotage particularly easy to enjoy while still offering structure and depth.

Versatile and food-friendly, this wine pairs beautifully with grilled or smoked meats, traditional braai dishes, and tomato-based cuisine.
The grapes were harvested in early February from selected vineyards in Constantia, where the region’s cooler maritime climate allows for slow ripening and balanced flavor development. After harvesting, the fruit was fermented in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve its vibrant fruit profile, with careful extraction to maintain softness and approachability. The wine was then matured with oak influence to add subtle spice and structure, while ensuring the purity of the Pinotage fruit remains the focal point.

Winemaker: Boela Gerber
Commander Simon van der Stel of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) arrived at the Cape supply station in 1679. Estranged from his wife, he arrived in the company of his children and sister-in-law, Cornelia Six. Back in the Netherlands, van der Stel had gained a solid background in viticulture at his vineyards in Muiderberg. There, he learned the art of wine and brandy making, which he was soon to implement here in the Cape.

The estate is today owned by the Groot Constantia Trust, an association incorporated under Section 21 of the Companies Act of 1973, which is committed to maintaining and restoring this national monument, South Africa's oldest and best-known wine estate. Constantia stands as a pinnacle of excellence for the wine industry and is an ideal example of the preservation of the country's cultural and historical heritage.

It is a fully operational farm, one of South Africa’s most visited tourist attractions, where a wide range of quality estate wines are created and sold (seven days a week), and a variety of other attractions, including restaurants and museums, make a visit an unforgettable experience.
