Description

The 2022 Groot Constantia Merlot is a polished South African red wine that showcases the elegance of Constantia’s cool-climate terroir. The nose opens with vibrant aromas of cherry, ripe plum, and dark berries, layered with subtle notes of vanilla and dark chocolate.

On the palate, juicy red fruit meets firm tannins and bright acidity, creating structure and finesse. This vintage is a compelling choice for Merlot lovers seeking depth, balance, and a touch of Old World charm from one of South Africa’s most historic estates.
The grapes were handpicked at 25.5-26° Balling and fermented in stainless steel tanks with regular pump overs during fermentation. The wine was left on the skins for two weeks after fermentation to maximize extraction, and malolactic fermentation was allowed in stainless steel. The wine matured in 35% new, 30% 2nd and 35% 3rd fill 225 liter French oak barrels for 15 months before blending and bottling.

The soil types vary from deep red clay soil to red-brown loamy soil, both from granitic origin.
