Description

A tribute to Rustenberg’s historic custodian, the John X Merriman 2022 is a classic Stellenbosch red blend crafted from the estate’s finest Bordeaux varietals. This age-worthy wine opens with aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, and dark plum, layered with hints of cigar tobacco, sour cherry, and subtle oak spice. Full-bodied yet elegant, it reflects the depth and structure of Rustenberg’s premium vineyards. Decant before serving to enjoy its full complexity and character.
The 2022 vintage demanded patience and precision. A cool, late spring followed by mid-summer heatwaves meant tannin ripeness came slowly—but beautifully. We crushed and destemmed the fruit, then gently pumped over during fermentation in stainless steel. After extended maceration, the wine aged for 20 months in French oak (35% new), gaining structure and depth. Egg white fining refined the final texture, preserving purity while enhancing balance and cellar potential.
