Description

This Syrah is dense and full-fruited, radiating power and depth. The bouquet brims with ripe, brambly berries and plums, layered with hints of black pepper and a whisper of cocoa powder. On the palate, it delivers plush, decadent flavors that achieve a remarkable balance.

Structured yet supple tannins, combined with refreshing acidity, support bold black-fruit flavors that unfold beautifully. This harmony of richness and structure makes for a wine that is both compelling and complex.
Estate-grown grapes are hand-harvested and partially destemmed, with 15% of the grapes kept as whole bunches. Fermentation takes place in open-top fermenters with manual punch-downs and pump-overs performed 2 to 4 times daily. Maceration continues for 14 to 21 days. Parcels and clones are vinified separately. Wine is matured in 500L French oak barrels for 18 months using a combination of 16% new and 84% seasoned oak.

Winemaker: Coenie Snyman
For 315 years Rust en Vrede has stood peacefully among the vineyards of Stellenbosch. The company and the estate are now headed up by Jean Engelbrecht and their family has specialized in producing only red wine with the focus on Shiraz, Cabernet, and Merlot. The underground cellar of the estate was the first of its kind for a privately owned South African winery. Designed by renowned architect Mr. Gawie Fagan, the perfectly temperature-controlled environment is of invaluable benefit to the production and bottle maturation of unique wines.

Rust en Vrede is a remarkable example of exquisite landscaping. At home and abroad, this unassuming Stellenbosch Estate has made a name for itself far beyond its modest, but infinitely charming, 55 hectares.
