Description

The Delheim Grand Reserve 2021 is the estate’s flagship Bordeaux-style blend, produced only from the finest vineyard blocks on the slopes of Simonsberg Stellenbosch. First released in 1981, this wine remains a benchmark for consistency, structure, and site expression.

The nose is classic and layered, with aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and cassis, complemented by notes of tobacco leaf, tomato leaf, and pencil shavings. On the palate, the wine is elegantly poised, with dark red fruit supported by smooth, chalky tannins that give both structure and finesse. There is a natural balance between fruit, acidity, and oak, leading to a long, composed finish that reflects the character of the region.

A serious, age-worthy red, ideal with lamb shank, roast beef, and rich, savory dishes.

Ratings/Accolades:
Platter's Wine Guide: 4.5 stars
Tim Atkin: 94 points
The grapes were hand-harvested in small batches from selected estate vineyards planted on decomposed granite (Oakleaf soils) at elevations of 220–280m. Fermentation took place in a combination of open-top fermenters and stainless steel tanks, with pump-overs and punch-downs used to extract color, flavor, and tannin.

Following fermentation, the wine was matured for 18 months in 300L French oak barrels, with only the finest barrels selected for the final blend. This careful approach ensures both structure and refinement, allowing the wine to develop gracefully over time.
