Description

A Syrah of striking elegance and power, the 2021 DMZ is crafted from premium Stellenbosch vineyards to showcase rich varietal character and finesse. Deep purple in the glass, this wine opens with bold aromas of ripe red plum, blackberries, and a distinctive touch of white pepper. Layers of violets, lavender, and spring blossoms add aromatic lift, while the palate reveals dark fruit depth interwoven with cinnamon, clove, and a hint of vanilla spice. Silky tannins and seamless oak integration ensure a long, graceful aging potential. A polished, cool-climate Syrah that balances intensity with refinement.
Hand-harvested Syrah grapes from our granite-rich Stellenbosch Kloof vineyards were fermented using whole berries and whole bunches for vibrant, spicy character. Natural fermentation took place in concrete and stainless steel, with gentle pump-overs to preserve elegance. Aged in a mix of concrete and 500L French oak barrels (10% new), this Syrah showcases purity, fine tannin, and signature white pepper notes.

De Morgenzon, ‘the morning sun,’ was so named as it is the first part of the Stellenboschkloof valley to see the sun because of its high altitude and aspects. Their slopes rise from about 200m to nearly 400m above sea level and their vistas embrace Cape Town, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Cape Hangklip, the Hottentots Holland mountains, Helderberg and Simonsberg with the ocean as a backdrop. The reputation of Wendy and Hylton Applebaum’s estate continues its ascent - one regularly marked by genuinely prestigious international and local awards.
