Description

It exhibits a dark red-black colored center and brightly ruby-rimmed edge. Opening unhurriedly it reveals a layered aromatic palette with notes of incense and violet blossom that segue to delicious black plum, fresh black currants and Boysenberries.

Subtle hints of sandalwood, sappy juniper and blonde tobacco gradually emerge with further time in the glass. The palate is luscious, with silky tannins and linear progression that finish with great presence and length. Generous fruit expression adds dimension to this elegant and impeccably well-balanced wine.

While the 2021 Series C is already complete in its youth, this blend will reward those who exercise patience, as it continues to evolve and develop complexity.
Twenty-two months in eighty-one percent new French oak barrique, with the balance in older French oak. Berries were supple-skinned, bursting with flavor, vibrant freshness and a bold tannin structure. Harvest began on February 11th ,only 3 days later than usual, and we were blessed with mild weather for the remainder of the season. Wines of the vintage are intensely colored and show a sophisticated poise and gravitas.

Winemaker: Martin Smith & Zelma Long
Vilafonté is the first American and South African joint wine-making venture. This groundbreaking red wine project is a partnership between a respected group of wine specialists from South Africa (Michael Ratcliffe) and the United States (Zelma Long and Phillip Freese).

Vilafonté is the first winery in South Africa to focus on making wine aimed specifically at the US market. The name Vilafonté is derived from the primary soil type of the 100-acre estate, whose character forms the foundation of the wines. The Vilafonté project aims to create the first luxury wine brand from South Africa.

About the Winery

Location

Paarl, South Africa

Paarl, South Africa

Paarl, located 37 miles inland from Cape Town and nestled between two mountains, enjoys a relatively hot climate with moderate to high rainfall. The well-drained granite and shale soils force vines to dig deep for nourishment, which strengthens the vines and naturally limits yields. This results in the production of premium-quality wines with concentrated flavors. Known for producing robust reds and elegant whites, Paarl offers a diverse range of wines that reflect the region’s rich terroir and winemaking tradition.
