Description

The Stony Brook Reserve Syrah 2022 is a powerful yet composed expression of Franschhoek Syrah, sourced from two low-yielding estate vineyard blocks. This wine captures the balance between New World richness and Old World structure, delivering both intensity and finesse.

The nose is perfumed and complex, with aromas of violet, freshly ground spice, and black pepper, layered with subtle herbal notes. On the palate, the wine is full and plush, showing bold dark fruit flavors supported by an energetic structure. The tannins are ripe yet grippy, giving the wine shape and aging potential, while the finish is long, balanced, and deeply satisfying.

A serious, food-driven Syrah, this wine pairs beautifully with slow-cooked meats, braised dishes, and rich winter fare.
The grapes were sourced from two low-yielding estate vineyard blocks, selected for concentration and character. After harvest, approximately 70% of the fruit was destemmed, with the remaining 30% included as whole clusters to enhance structure and aromatic complexity.

A short pre-fermentation maceration of around 24 hours was followed by a cool fermentation, preserving fruit purity and balance. The wine was then pressed and matured for 24 months in French oak barriques (20% new), allowing for integration of tannins, spice, and texture while maintaining varietal expression.

Winemaker: Craig McNaught
In 1995 the McNaught family purchased an old fruit farm, this property is now known as Stony Brook. With a strong focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon and Chardonnay, the McNaught family replanted the entire farm to vines and built a small cellar in which to produce the first wines under the Stony Brook label. As time has passed, the ideals of Stony Brook have remained firmly in place and the wines still reflect a strong sense of place and passion.

In 2011, the owners were joined by their son, Craig McNaught, who took over the reigns as winemaker. The latest revelation at Stony Brook has been the introduction of Tempranillo vines to the property, comprising the only component in one of their critically-acclaimed wines, Ovidius.
