Description

A complex nose of dark aromas, including blackberry, cassis, and tobacco, with notes of cedar and oak spice. The palate is supple and mouth-filling, with concentrated black fruit supported by oak spice, roasted nuts, and a hint of fresh fynbos. The tannins are firm yet well-knit and integrated.

Winter rainfall was higher than in the previous two winters. Irregular temperatures from winter until the flowering period, combined with cool growing conditions, led to significant variations in the vineyards. The cool weather and regular rain showers resulted in less water stress for the vines during ripening. Harvest time was characterized by frequent rain showers.

Kanonkop is a fourth-generation family estate, originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch region of the Cape. It is located between Stellenbosch and Paarl on the R44 and falls within a ward called Simonsberg, more commonly known as the “red wine bowl” of South Africa.

It has earned a reputation, both at home and abroad, as an area that produces the best wines in the country. In addition to the solid foundation on which the estate’s winemaking principles are based, it is also blessed with ideal soils, cool sea breezes, and long summer days, creating the perfect climate for growing grapes.
