Description
Opaque ruby red in the glass. The nose opens with cracked black pepper, ripe red berries, dark plum and a subtle hint of lavender. On the palate, it shows generous plummy fruit and spice, with a clean, elegant finish that reflects the character of a cool, late vintage.
It’s drinking beautifully now but has the structure to age gracefully for another 5 to 8 years with proper cellaring. A natural match for herb-crusted lamb or grilled portobello mushrooms.

Grapes from different vineyard sites and regions were fermented separately. All parcels were destalked and lightly crushed before fermentation. Fermentation on the skins for approximately 10 days and then pressed. Malolactic fermentation was completed in oak barrels with a small portion remaining in tank. The wine was racked and sent to barrel for 20 months, aged in French oak with approximately 20% new wood being used. The components were then selected, blended and bottled.

Eager to explore a wider range of wines using grapes grown in optimal conditions, Charles Back abandoned the estate wine concept in the 1980s, choosing rather to “go where the terroir is”. Today, they are one of the few farms that proudly own all their own vineyards, with land in Paarl, Darling, Swartland and Stellenbosch.
