The Kruger Family Wines Karoo Syrah 2023 is an extraordinary expression of Syrah from one of South Africa's most extreme vineyard sites. Grown near Sutherland in the semi-desert Karoo at an astonishing 1,500 meters above sea level, this tiny-production wine combines the intensity of high-altitude fruit with remarkable freshness, savory complexity, and tightly defined structure.
The nose unfolds with red and black berries, floral perfume, black pepper, smoked meat, and subtle gun-smoke notes, with earthy, herbal nuances adding another layer of complexity. The palate is concentrated and energetic, with dense, pure fruit held together by vibrant acidity and firm, tightly packed tannins. The 2023 Karoo Syrah was fermented with approximately 30% whole bunches, introducing additional aromatic complexity, spice, and structure while preserving the distinctive freshness of this extreme high-altitude vineyard.
Following fermentation, the wine was matured in older oak barrels, keeping overt oak influence restrained and allowing the fruit, peppery spice, savory character, and mineral expression of the Sutherland site to remain at the forefront.
